Is the Spirit the source of creativity and aesthetics? I’ve wondered about this question on and off since my out of body experience many years ago. I saw foreign landscapes buzzing with energy and vibrant color. The beauty overwhelmed my “spiritual eyes”. I felt the exhilaration of living and a connection to everything in that one moment. My gut instinct told me that creativity and spirit were somehow irrevocably intertwined.

That experience forever seared in my mind, made me seek out similar connectivity in day to day life. No man-made structure has ever made me feel a connection to “God”. Nature is my link to the Divine. I hear the wind whisper its secrets amongst the leaves and grasses. When I walk on the beach, a roar of the ocean envelops me in its embrace. The crickets and birds are singing their praises to Mother Nature, and I find myself in church.

I struggled for years to find my artistic style. I tried different things, none of which expressed what I wanted to say. How do I show people in my art that there is more to this life than what meets the eye? How do I explain that Spirit is behind everything?

It finally occurred to me that I could try to mimic what I saw when I was not bound by my body. Nature was the logical choice for me for the subject matter. I decided to paint landscapes that had a feeling of “aliveness”. I chose to paint in bright colors to reflect what I saw that day. Replicating the visual vibrancy then became easy, inspired by the palette of Monet. Finding a way to express the energetic aliveness accurately was another matter. The brush did not create the effect I was hoping for. So out of shear frustration, I picked up my painting knives that were collecting dust in a corner of my studio. I combined my oil paints with cold wax, and applied this medium onto the wood panel. There it was. The texture created by the knives expressed a similar energy to what I felt during my spiritual adventure.

I now invite the viewer to explore this work, and ponder the source of creativity and aesthetics. Are these paintings being experienced by mind or Spirit? Only you can answer this question for yourself. Either way, my hope is that this art creates a feeling of connection and joy within you.

Sometimes the strangest things can send you on your perfect path… I spent years messing around in the studio playing with different mediums and subjects. I lacked focus. And because I lacked focus, I also lacked motivation. I had no “Big Why” for my artwork. I didn’t...

A few years later, and in yet another State….  I turned to my Tarot deck out of desperation (yeah, I’m one of THOSE people) to help me figure out the subject matter for my art, and how it might help people. I was whining to my deck, asking what the heck my subject...

You’ve heard that saying, “Be careful what you wish for…..”.  I told myself how nice it would be to have all the free time I needed to just focus on my artwork, and really nail down my style - enter Covid-19. My service industry job was dead in the water. I now had my...
